Pointing the Way

Earl signs along construction route

Who is Earl?
Earl pointing to the entrance to several businesses If you have been down on McKinney Avenue lately, you probably noticed "Earl" hanging over the street. He's pointing the way to the driveways of the many of the businesses. These series of overhead directional signs were erected by the Uptown Public Improvement District (with the cooperation of the Trolley Authority) on behalf of the area's merchants as a way to help customers more easily access businesses during the reconstruction process. When construction begins on the west side of McKinney (in the spring of 2000) Earl will point the way to businesses on that side as well.

Where did Earl come from?

Earl is actually inspired by Earl Leeson, a motorman for the McKinney Avenue Trolley. Earl is the ultimate railway buff. He goes on vacation in a special pickup truck outfitted with steel wheels for use on railroad rails. He clears his routes with the railroad's various railroad dispatchers. His last trip was to Alabama and back entirely by using railroad freight routes.
