How long will construction last?
Construction started on June 6, 1999 and is expected to last one and one-half to two years.
Why is the street being reconstructed?
Localized street repair is no longer feasible because the street has exceeded its useful life. Also, reconstruction will include street drainage, streetscape and utility improvements.
What is the cost of the reconstruction?
The construction contract for the project is 4.7 million dollars.
Will the antique bricks be reused?
The salvageable brick will be used at crosswalks and to add a two foot band adjacent to the curbs, widening the sidewalk.
Will the trolley continue to operate?
Yes, the trolley will run on a modified schedule during construction to preserve the charm of the UPTOWN area. Trolley hours Monday through Friday will be from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday hours from 10:00 AM until 10:00PM.
Visit the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority at www.mata.org or call 214.855.0006 for further information.
Will there be emergency vehicle access?
Yes, part of the planning involved in the reconstruction was to develop and implement emergency access response plans.
What will the area look like when its finished?
New concrete pavers and concrete tinted to resemble the existing antique bricks will be used in the streets along with the salvageable antique brick in crosswalks and sidewalks. The intersections at Oak Grove, Howell, and Allen will be the most affected. A new traffic signal will be installed at Oak Grove. There will be additional trees planted in the sidewalks with tree grates, the trees will separate the pedestrian areas from the vehicular area.
